~Show and Tell~

Hello and Happy Monday, dear friends!!

Hope you are all enjoying some lovely weather in your "neck of the woods!"

**********

It is hard to believe that it has been almost 2 months since my last post!!!

What in the world have I been doing all this time????

This!!!

Yes, I have been working on hooking a rug!!!!!

It is a wonderful antique adaptation by my sweet friend Lori Rippey, of Homespunprims and I  have wanted to hook it for a very long time!!

Unfortunately, back in 2016, I tripped over some plugs in my front yard and fell over backwards!  It really hurt but I honestly didn't think I did any real damage!!
Little did I know that that fall would lead to arm pain and then shoulder AND arm pain and finally
after x rays and the dreaded MRI, I was diagnosed with Frozen Shoulder!!!

Let me just say that if I could describe it with one word, I would say EXCRUCIATING!!!!
Thankfully, it was my left arm and so it still allowed me to do things, but I had many limitations and the pain was just constant!!!  I know that many advocate PT for it, but after doing lots of reading about it and talking to some friends who had dealt with it themselves and realizing it could take up to 18 or more months to go away whether I did PT or not, I opted to just use heat, Ibuprofen, and rest!
It was the right choice for me!

During this time I could still do hand stitching and Punch Needle, and it just seemed to take me FOREVER to get projects done, but I was so grateful I could still do some of the things I loved!
There were so many things I could no longer do and one of them was rug hooking!!!

It certainly was a LONG WAIT!!!!

I'm was so happy for the day I could actually raise my arm over my head and knew then that rug hooking would again be in my future!!!
It took 16 months for me to heal and I can't tell you how good it finally feels!!!!

Fast forward to this year!!!  I joined a new group here in Phoenix, lead by Janet Carruth, that meets one Wed. each month and have not missed a meeting!!!  It is SO NICE to be able to get together with other women who share my love of creating and I have so enjoyed making new friends, too!!

Then in March, I attended a Hook In in the area and actually started working on the antique adaptation!!!

I had so much fun color planning this one and was so excited to begin pulling loops!!

Here is some of my early progress!

This old measure sure is handy for holding lots of different black worms!!

Love this divided holder for keeping my worms separated!

More lovely red worms for the hearts and flowers!!

I admit once I started hooking, it almost became an obsession with me!!  I pretty much did only those things I had to do and just spent the rest of the time hooking this rug!!

I finally pulled the last loop about a week ago and then needed to
steam and bind it!!

I actually used 2 inch torn wool strips and attached them to the front folded linen,

and then folded it over to the back and stitched it in place!!!

I LOVE the wool binding so much!!

Finally finished!!!!  Hooray!!!!!

I even made a label for the back!!

Here it is hanging on the wall in my living room!!!
It truly was labor of love and  I am so happy to have it all done!!!

****************

It is so good to have a pain free shoulder and arm again and now I can get back to more of a normal routine!!!  I think it just felt so good to be able to hook again that I just got lost in it!!!!

Many thanks to those of you who asked about me and wondered where I was!! I am doing GREAT and it was nice to be missed!!!!  Now to get back to the business of creating some new things and hoping to post again soon!!!

Thank you for following along and being part of my journey, dear friends!!!

Wishing you JOY in doing what you LOVE~

Julie, your rendition of this antique is awesome!!! I'll save a photo of it for inspiration as one day I'd also like to hook it soo. Matter of fact, early on when trying to decide what was next, it was on the list of 'maybe'. The the one I'm working on now won out.

OMG Julie I had a frozen shoulder about 2 years ago. I did go to therapy for about 6 months and felt like my shoulder was just getting worse...so I quit and just kept doing the one exercice my doctor told me to do and took many hot showers. I knew it was getting better when I could use my arm to reach the spices in an upper cabinet. Then I could drive with my left arm again...then I could move my arm back behind me again. In my case therapy was not the answer. Love the colors of your new rug! Alos like how you finished it. I am almost finished with my 4th of July one and also working on a penny rug project. Also have been drawing out things for Halloween already. LOL Janice

So glad your shoulder thawed out. Mine isn't frozen but it's almost a year and I still can't lift for deodorant! It's nice that you have a group to share your work.

Julie , it is so good to hear from you and know that nothing awful happene!!!! I have missed your posts! Wow, you new hooked rug is truly gorgeous. I love the size and the rich deep colors too. Congratulations on your new masterpiece!!! While I have never hooked a rug, I can understand how complicated and time consuming it must be to get it right. Beautiful works take time and focus and you have an artist's eye for making that happen!!

Happy upcoming Memorial Day weekend!! Can you believe it is already the end of May? The first half of 2018 has flown by. Before we know it, we will be putting out pumpkins and eating Halloween candy!! Works for me!! LOL!!

Have a great day!

Dear Julie, your rug is just beautiful and I love those rich colors you used.
I'm so glad you are finally pain-free. I'm still feeling lots of pain in my right shoulder but it's getting a bit better. I know it takes time to heal. mine isn't frozen but my pain also radiate in the shoulder blades since my falls on the ice this past winter.

We are still cleaning up from the flood and it will be a while before things are back to normal but we are getting there little by little.

Wishing you a great summer of creativity and fun.

Hi Julie,
So pleased to hear from you. Glad you resolved that frozen shoulder problem too. I simply love your rug and am so happy for you to have a close group of people who share your interests. There is nothing here in the desert. I did find a group in Redlands, but then that means traveling down the Cajon Pass and mostly freeway driving ... NOT for me, so I stay put until we get moved to Temecula/Murietta area, hoping all that will change. I love my visit to your blog, it is always inspiring to see your perfectly, beautiful creations. Hope you have a great Memorial Day celebration.
Keep cool my friend, with Folk Art Hugs and Peace for all,
Barb

Hi Barb,
It is so nice to be back to blogging again!! Life just got so busy and we can't do everything, can we?? Yes, the Frozen Shoulder was NOT FUN but I am so enjoying being pain free after so long!! I am really enjoying the rug group and it is so nice that there are also other groups that meet near me as well! I used to attend the group in Redlands and just loved those ladies! So sorry you can't attend due to the driving and I certainly don't blame you on that score!! I'm excited for your move to Temecula and feel sure you can get connected with a group there, plus you will be close to Primitive Gatherings!
Thank you for all your sweet words and know how much I appreciate them, as well as your visits!! I feel the same when I visit your blog!!
Hope you and yours have a wonderful Memorial Day!!

Hi Julie,

Your rug is lovely. The binding looks great too. I tried rug hooking but couldn't quite get the hang of it but admire all those who can hook. So glad that your should is better so you can continue to pursue your passion. I mostly quilt and do some wool appliqué and punch needle. Keeps me busy and I never seem to have enough time even though I am retired.

Love seeing all your projects.
