~Penny Progress~

Happy Wednesday, dear friends!!
It is a lovely day here in Peoria with the windows open and a gentle breeze blowing!
Later the temps will climb a bit but the blinds and fans
 help me stay cool
 while I stitch!!

I so appreciated all of your comments regarding my penny rug
and wanted to share my progress!
I also wanted to say the some of you thought the rug was Americana colors!
I know that cameras and computer monitors don't always give you a true picture of the colors
 and I'm sorry about that!!
Just know that the real colors are BLACK, RED, and GOLD, with tan thread!!

I started with the center and the large red pennies!

The tan floss is a bit hard to see on the center gold pennies in the photo,
but you can see them in person!

There are a total of 9 large pennies all stitched in place!!
The large pennies are 2 1/2 inches and the small pennies are 1 1/2 inches!

I am so happy I  decided to stitch the smaller pennies in place first,
as it is really a lot of work to turn this big rug around!!
I also decided to use my plastic cutting mat underneath to keep it from slipping on the table!

Another thing I did was to actually fold the sides up to make it smaller,
allowing me to get closer to the pennies
and also protect my arms from all those sharp pins!!
My arms looked like a kitty got a bit too rambunctious with me
after the first session of stitching!!

I thread 7 large eye needles
(I would thread more if I had them)
with my tan crochet thread and have them at the ready
so I can just stitch each penny without having to re-thread!
It really helps to keep a rhythm
and also makes me feel like I have accomplished something!!

After I use up all the threaded needles, I take a big stretch, re-thread,
and then decide if I will do some more
 or call it a day!!

I was a bit worried that I might not have enough of this thread but after counting what I have left,
I am happy to say that I actually have a bit more than I need!!!
Each large penny uses one long thread!!
What a relief!!!

Here is what it looks like on the back, as you can really see the tan threads!!
I actually did stitch some of the large gold pennies as well as the red ones!

My next stitching session involved working on more of the large gold pennies!!
It seemed easier this time as I had worked out all the "kinks"
and with the rug folded up my arms looked much better!!

Yesterday I started working on the large black pennies and after stitching only 2 of them,
I decided to stitch the red ones below, and then ended up stitching the final gold and black ones!!
I just couldn't help it!!!

It really helped me to see what it would look like to have a corner stitched
and now I am so excited to get started again today and stitch some more!!

Here is another view of the back!!  Look at all those stitched pennies!!!

The black pennies are very hard to see when stitching on the black background,
so I brought out my large OttLite and it really helped!!

I also noticed that the light helped make the true colors stand out more,
so I'm hoping you are seeing the right colors on your computer screens!!

This really is a BIG PROJECT, but I am truly enjoying the challenge
and will just take each day
and see how much I want to stitch on it!!

Some of you mentioned that you were inspired
to want to start your own penny rug,
and I do hope that if you are working on one,
 you will share it!
The nice thing is that you can work on whatever size you want,
 and whatever color you want!!
 Just HAVE FUN!!

Thanks so much for your visit today and for following my progress!!!
I will be back soon with more to share!!

Wishing you a day filled with Happy Stitching, my friends~

Julie, your progress is coming along lovely! Was wondering how you could stitch with all those pins!! I can really see the colors now with your Ott Lamp, don't you just love those? You have inspired me to do my Maggie Bonanomi Simplify Rug. It was on my "to do" list, I will send you a picture of my progress! Fun to actually do a project that I plan on keeping for myself! Have fun stitching that beauty!!

Hi Mona,
It's amazing how fast it goes, one stitch at a time!! I tried to use shorter pins but they just didn't hold the pennies in place! Folding the rug really helps me not get stuck, and as soon as I am most of the way around I just remove it!! I'm so happy you are going to make a penny rug!! I made one of those and just love mine!! I know you will love it and do a beautiful job!!! I used old green Army blanket wool and some wool from an old cream colored blanket!!! Have fun and enjoy each stitch!!
Thanks for your visit and hope you have a wonderful week!

Julie, your Ott lite does show the colors. You are just moving right along. Gots to finish my hooked mat and in the meantime waiting for some chenille needles with blunt points. Am seriously thinking of pursuing a MB design. Something small for starters. You are just so inspiring that now I feel like I want to do some stitching instead of hooking or punching. Have you ever thought about stapling instead of pinning? I have seen others do this. Also, just ordered some moire wool thread. I sounds wonderful and I think I'll like it for wool applique projects. Keep us updated as it is looking absolutely beautiful. Love your choice of colors too.
Enjoy the rest of the week. For us, it is very windy again and warmer. No open windows, just too dusty.
Take care with Folk Art Hugs, Barb

Hi Barb,
I see those same colors when I am looking at it but for some reason my camera doesn't! The Ott Lite really made a difference when I looked at my computer screen so hoping everyone is seeing it!! My needles don't have blunt points and have large eyes! Not sure what the size or kind is, but raided my needles and these seemed to work the best!! I do have some chenille needles with blunt points but they would not go through! I love wool applique and since I have so much of this heavy wool, it is just perfect for penny rugs! So happy you have been inspired and please do share what you decide on! Mona is going to do the Simplify rug by Maggie B! I have made that one and love it!! Enjoy that moire wool thread, too!
Thanks so much for stopping by and hope you have a wonderful week!

Julie, your colors show beautifully with your lamp. I have never made anything of this size only small
candle mats etc. You truly are ambitious! It is gorgeous!
I am in the process of spinning my own wool moire. It's a learning process but I'm doing OK. I just
finished a hooked mat for an antique stool my Mom gave me and I used my newly spun thread to
put a hem on the back. It isn't meant for that I know, but I had to give it a try to see if I made it
strong enough not to break half way through and I was successful. I now know why I saved all of
my old wood thread spools!

Good heavens, your stitches are perfectly lined up like tiny soldiers. The back is as attractive as the front, albeit less colorful.

Hi Marcia,
Thanks so much!! Yes, it is a BIG GIRL, but I'm having fun and taking my time!! How amazing that you can spin your own wool and thread!! Now THAT is amazing!! So happy it worked! You will have to share on your blog!! Thanks so much for your words of encouragement and for stopping by!!

Hi Saundra,
I had to laugh at your comment about my stitches being like perfect little soldiers!! Don't look too closely as there may be a few "stragglers" here and there!! I really love seeing the back as I can see how much progress I am making!! Thanks so much for stopping in for a visit!!

Hope you both have a wonderful week, filled with spinning and hooking!

Your stitching is SO fine! This is going to be spectacular when it's finished. I have a suggestion for you. Instead of pinning your pennies in place, use a stapler! I absolutely LOVE it cuz they are held securely and are easily removed when the time comes. I'm on the hunt for an extra large one for bigger projects. You should try it!

Julie - My Primitive Heart said...

Hi Gayle,
You are just too kind!! I told Saundra not too look too closely for all those "stragglers!"
I have heard that about a stapler and have wanted to try it, but the smaller pins didn't work I will have to give it a try on something else sometime!! Thanks for the great tip!!
Hope you are getting settled in your gorgeous new home and I'm sure you are enjoying that AMAZING STUDIO!!!

Looking good, but am afraid it still looks like Americana colors to me. Thanks for clarifying that for us. Temps here in Michigan were a balmy 77 and it felt so good. Janice

It is coming on so nicely!
I love the true colors showing with your lite.
I have been wanting one of those for awhile now!
Love the pennies!
So very appealing.
I like the black with the other colors.
Blue would not be as lovely.
Hugs, Pennie girl, enjoying your sharing!
I always love all your projects!

Hi Janice,
I'm sad that it is not showing the right colors to you but am glad I shared it so you know what it is supposed to look like!! lol
I know an Americana one would be awesome, so maybe I should consider that next! No matter, I am having fun and enjoying stitching it!!
Glad you had great weather!! We will soon be feeling the intense heat, so I am happy for these lovely days!
Thanks for visiting and enjoy your week!

Hi Annie,
So happy you love the rug and are able to see the right colors! I guess some computers are still showing it wrong! The Ott Lite is really nice and I love to use it in my sewing room! It is a worth while purchase for so many things!!
I laughed when you called me Penny Girl!! I do feel like one after cutting and stitching all those pennies!! lol
Thanks for all your kind words and your visit!! They truly warm my heart!
Enjoy your week!

Hi Robyn,
You are so sweet! I think the more I stitch, the better they get!! By the time I finish I will have stitched 338 pennies!! That is a LOT of pennies!!!
Hope you and Annie have a wonderful week, my friend!!

You got a lot done on your penny rug Julie. I was wondering if you used thin wool for the backing or was it a blanket?
Your stitches are precise and I love hoe you work assembly-line fashion. You are organized to a T. It's looking beautiful.
. It's been raining here and the water level has gone up again for a second time.
The water is almost level with the road in the lane.
Have a great weekend.
Hugs, Julia

Hi Julia,
In one way it feels like a lot, but then I realize how many more I have to stitch!! The backing is a medium weight black cotton and I was so happy I remembered I had it tucked away! It works perfectly, although wool or felt would have been a good choice, too!
I love looking at the back as it really shows the stitches!
So sorry about all that rain!! I'm sure you are hoping it doesn't rise any more!! Please stay safe and dry!
Enjoy your weekend!!

Oh, Julie,
Your penny mat is amazing! Funny, I thought is was red, white and blue, too. Strange that the Ott light causes the camera to show better color. It is so hard getting accurate colors with a digital camera!!!
Keep us posted on your progress.
Hugs :)

Hi Lauren,
I'm so happy you like my penny rug!! I think it must look like that to most people, but I guess everyone loves red, white, and blue anyway, so it is all good!! Maybe I'll have Jeff take my next pictures and see if he has the magic touch! We have also talked about getting a better camera and this may be the incentive! lol
Hope you have a great weekend!!
